WhatsApp is reportedly introducing a new security feature that could prevent users from logging into their accounts if their phones are running outdated versions of Android or iOS.

According to a new report, the feature is being enabled through a server-side update, meaning users do not need to install a specific version of the WhatsApp app to receive it. The change is said to be rolling out on both Android and iOS devices.
When affected users try to sign in, WhatsApp may display a message instructing them to update their phone’s operating system before access to the app is restored. The prompt also includes steps explaining how to check the current software version on the device.
Users will not be able to bypass this requirement, as WhatsApp is reportedly implementing the measure for security reasons.

The move could help reduce risks associated with older operating systems, which may contain known vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit to install malware. By requiring newer software versions, WhatsApp could limit the chances of compromised devices being used to spread malicious links or harmful content through trusted contacts.
WhatsApp has not yet announced which Android or iOS versions will be affected, so it remains unclear how old a device’s software must be before login restrictions are applied. More details are expected once the feature becomes officially documented by the company.
