Apple’s service and repair website reveals that the top layer of the iPhone Duo’s foldable inner display can be replaced. The replacement is available for $19.99 for customers with active AppleCare.

Apple says customers can visit one of its authorized service providers to replace the matte screen cover. AppleCare also covers cover display or back glass repairs for $29 and inner display replacement for $99. Accidental damage costs $99, while theft and loss protection costs $149.
Apple’s VP of hardware engineering recently explained that the company wanted to give users the option to replace the top layer when it becomes worn. Apple has designed the layer to be as durable as possible, but users may eventually want to replace it with a new one.

It remains unclear whether users will be able to replace the cover themselves or whether third party alternatives will become available, such as privacy films or glossy covers. The cost of replacing the layer without AppleCare is also unknown.
More details should become available once the iPhone Duo starts shipping, but Apple is at least providing an official replacement option for the inner display cover.
Samsung takes a similar approach with its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones, offering the first screen protector replacement free within the first 12 months of purchase. Each subsequent replacement costs $19.99.
