TCL has expanded its P80 smartphone lineup with three new models, including the P80 Ultra, P80 Pro and standard P80. The P80 Ultra is the most advanced of the trio and introduces the first NxtPaper smartphone with an AMOLED display instead of the LCD panels used on previous models.
The TCL P80 Ultra features a 6.83 inch AMOLED NxtPaper display designed to provide a paper like viewing experience in different lighting conditions. TCL uses circular polarization to reduce reflections and improve compatibility with polarized sunglasses.
The display also uses a homogenizing film to blend the red, green and blue subpixels for a more uniform white output. TCL says blue light has been reduced to just 2.9% without compromising image quality, while its Nano Crystal Shield Glass provides enhanced anti glare performance.
The panel has a 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 100% DCI P3 coverage. It can also reach a peak brightness of 3,200 nits, making it considerably brighter than the LCD displays used on earlier NxtPaper smartphones.
Powering the P80 Ultra is the Dimensity 7400 Elite chipset, paired with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The phone packs a 5,800mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging.
The Ultra gets the strongest camera setup in the P80 series. It features a 50MP primary camera with OIS, a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera with OIS and an 8MP ultrawide camera. The front camera uses a 32MP sensor.
A dedicated NxtPaper slider is included on the side of the phone and provides quick access to different reading modes, including Max Ink. The mode reduces notifications, puts background apps to sleep and can extend battery life for up to seven days of immersive reading. TCL also preloads more than 500 books on the device.
The phone includes several AI features, with AI enhanced Reading standing out as one of the more interesting additions. It can convert ebooks into spoken audio and even present the content in a podcast like format.
The TCL P80 Ultra comes in Sunlit Gold, Burgundy and Midnight Blue. It has an aluminum frame, an IP68 rating and has passed MIL STD 810H shock testing. TCL promises four major OS updates and seven years of security updates.
The TCL P80 Pro shares much of the Ultra’s hardware, including the 6.83 inch 1.5K NxtPaper AMOLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, 3,200 nits brightness, Dimensity 7400 Elite chipset, 8GB RAM and 5,800mAh battery with 45W charging.
The main difference is the camera system. The P80 Pro has a 50MP 1/1.56 inch primary camera with OIS and an 8MP ultrawide, but it drops the Ultra’s 3x periscope camera.
The standard TCL P80 is designed to make the AMOLED display more affordable. It keeps the same 6.83 inch panel with 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 3,200 nits peak brightness and 100% DCI P3 coverage, but does not include NxtPaper technology.
The P80 starts with 128GB of storage and goes up to 256GB, while the P80 Pro offers 256GB or 512GB. The P80 and P80 Pro will receive three major OS updates alongside seven years of security updates.
TCL is launching all three phones immediately. The P80 Ultra starts at €550 for the 8GB/256GB version, while the P80 Pro is more than €100 cheaper despite retaining the same NxtPaper AMOLED display. The standard P80 is the most affordable model in the lineup, with upgrading its storage to 256GB costing an additional €30.
