Apple is preparing to release iOS 27 shortly after its iPhone event next week, and a new feature could make it possible to use a single phone number across two iPhones.

The feature, called iPhone Handoff, was briefly shown on a slide during Apple’s WWDC announcements in June. However, a MacRumors forum member has now provided more details after testing the feature using two simulated iPhones through Device Hub in Xcode 27.

The setup requires one iPhone to be designated as the primary device, while the second becomes a companion device. The main eSIM stays on the primary iPhone, while a companion eSIM is created for the second device.

Once configured, users can move between the two iPhones while keeping the same phone number. This could be particularly useful for people who regularly switch between two devices.

According to the testing, the phone number automatically moves between the iPhones depending on which device is unlocked and actively being used. A notification is also expected to appear in the Dynamic Island whenever the number switches between devices.

Cellular settings will remain accessible only from the primary iPhone. The feature will also depend on carrier support, with T Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany reportedly among the carriers that could support iPhone Handoff initially.

Apple is expected to provide more information about iPhone Handoff once iOS 27 becomes available to the public.
