WhatsApp Introduces Recent Media Suggestions Directly in Chats

WhatsApp already suggests stickers above the keyboard on Android based on the emojis users type. Now, the messaging platform is expanding this feature with media suggestions. The new option is gradually rolling out to some Android and iOS users running the latest versions of the app. When you open a conversation, WhatsApp can now suggest sending the most recent photo or video added to your gallery.

The feature can appear in two different ways, although users will only see one of them. In the first version, a notification appears above the chat bar as soon as you open a conversation, displaying a thumbnail of your latest photo or video and asking whether you want to share it. In the second version, the camera icon in the chat bar is temporarily replaced with a thumbnail of the recent media. You can ignore either suggestion and continue chatting normally, while the notification also includes a close button.

Tapping the suggestion does not immediately send the selected media. Instead, WhatsApp opens its drawing editor, allowing you to review the photo or video and add a caption or sticker before sharing it. You can also exit the editor without sending anything, helping prevent accidental media sharing if you tap the suggestion unintentionally.

WhatsApp does not distinguish between media types or where they came from when making these suggestions. It simply selects the most recently added item in your gallery, whether it is a photo you took, a screenshot, an image downloaded from the web or a video saved from another app.

The feature is enabled automatically once it becomes available on your account. However, users who do not want these suggestions can disable them by going to Settings, selecting Chats and turning off “Recent media suggestions”. The rollout is happening gradually, with more accounts expected to receive the feature over the coming weeks. WhatsApp has yet to confirm when it will become available to everyone.
