Apple has unveiled the fourth generation Apple TV 4K as part of its latest smart home announcements. However, the new streaming device costs twice as much as its predecessor did at launch in 2022, even when compared with the older 128GB model with Ethernet.

The new model brings significant performance improvements thanks to Apple’s A19 chip, also found in the iPhone 17. Compared with the A15 chip in the previous generation, CPU performance is 50% faster, while GPU performance has doubled.

The A19 also includes a built in AV1 decoder, which is important for modern streaming services. Apple has discontinued the 64GB option, leaving a single configuration with 128GB of storage and gigabit Ethernet as standard.

Beyond streaming, the Apple TV 4K supports games through Apple Arcade and workouts through Apple Fitness+. Continuity Camera lets users make video calls using an iPhone as a webcam, while iCloud integration allows photos to be displayed on the television.

The remote retains its familiar design but now supports Find My with Precision Finding, making it easier to locate when misplaced.

Apple has also expanded its speaker support. Users can connect up to four HomePod mini 2 or second generation HomePod speakers for a surround sound setup. Different models can be mixed, but the front speakers must match each other, as must the rear pair.

Alternatively, users can connect up to two pairs of AirPods with Spatial Audio for private listening. Audio features include Dolby Atmos, while video supports Dolby Vision, HDR, HDR10+ and HLG. The device outputs video at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, with support for 21:9 displays and projectors.

The new Apple TV 4K can also serve as a smart home control centre through Wi Fi and Thread connectivity. When someone rings a compatible video doorbell, the live camera feed can appear on the television. Users can speak to visitors and unlock the door if a compatible smart lock is installed.

Security cameras can also appear in picture in picture mode, allowing users to monitor their surroundings while watching other content.

With Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, the device can analyse security camera activity, generate descriptions and provide summarised notifications when movement is detected. Apple’s A19 chip includes Secure Exclaves, protected environments designed to process data separately from the rest of the system. Siri AI and Apple Intelligence combine on device processing with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute to help protect user privacy.

Three far field microphones allow users to activate Siri with the “Hey Siri” command from across the room. The assistant can control television playback and compatible smart home devices.

The fourth generation Apple TV 4K is available for preorder through Apple’s online store for $300. The previous generation launched at $129 for the 64GB model and $149 for the 128GB version with Ethernet. The new model comes in just one configuration and is scheduled to go on sale on November 13.
