WhatsApp is continuing development of its privacy-focused messaging tools by testing a new “view once” feature for text messages on iOS.
The feature allows users to send text messages that can only be viewed a single time by the recipient. Once the message has been opened and read, it automatically disappears from the chat, preventing it from being viewed again.

According to reports, sending a view once text message will be straightforward. Users will simply need to long-press the Send button and select the new “Send as view once” option before delivering the message.
WhatsApp first began testing the functionality on Android earlier this month, and development has now expanded to iOS. The company already offers view once capabilities for photos, videos, and voice messages, and the addition of text messages would complete the feature across all major content types.
The new privacy feature is expected to work in both individual conversations and group chats. However, it will not be supported in WhatsApp Channels.

It is important to note that this feature is different from another capability discovered earlier this year. In May, reports revealed that WhatsApp was working on a feature that would allow messages to automatically expire after a user-selected period of time. The newly discovered tool instead focuses on one-time viewing, where a message disappears immediately after being opened once.
At the moment, view once text messages are not available to public beta testers and are reportedly being tested internally by WhatsApp developers. There is currently no official timeline for a wider rollout, but the feature highlights WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to provide users with more control over their privacy and conversations.
