DJI Sues Insta360 Over Similarities Between Luna Ultra and Osmo Pocket 4P

Just days after Insta360 unveiled the Luna Ultra as a rival to DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4P, DJI has responded with two lawsuits in the United States alleging patent infringement.

In the first lawsuit, DJI claims the Luna series copies the design of its Osmo Pocket lineup. The company argues that Insta360 infringed on several of its design patents, covering elements such as the elongated handheld body, the neck connecting the body to the gimbal assembly, the camera module, rotating display, bezel, control section with the scroll wheel and record button, side accessory slot, and the port located at the base.

DJI is seeking an injunction that could potentially halt sales of the Insta360 Luna series in the US if the court rules in its favor.

The second lawsuit focuses on utility patents. DJI alleges that Insta360 violated four patents related to gimbal functionality and subject tracking technology. These include systems that allow switching between follow and lock modes with a single control, integrated subject tracking without requiring a separate app, image-based gimbal control using the device’s own camera feed, and built-in subject tracking with on-screen display.

The legal battle adds to an already tense relationship between the two companies. Earlier this year, DJI filed a separate lawsuit against Insta360 in China, accusing the company of hiring former DJI employees and using allegedly stolen research and development work to support drone-related patent filings.

The outcome of the US cases could have significant implications for Insta360’s newly launched Luna lineup, particularly if DJI succeeds in obtaining a sales ban.
