Amazon’s Globalstar Acquisition Will Not Disrupt Apple’s Satellite Features

Amazon and Globalstar have finalized a massive $11 billion acquisition deal, but one important detail for iPhone users is that Apple’s satellite features are expected to remain fully operational.

As part of the agreement, Amazon will also acquire Apple’s existing 20% stake in Globalstar.

Apple originally secured that stake through a $1.1 billion partnership commitment signed in 2024, which included a $400 million share purchase aimed at expanding satellite-based services for iPhones and Apple Watches.

The acquisition is closely tied to Amazon’s growing satellite internet ambitions through its low-Earth orbit broadband initiative known as Amazon Leo, a project designed to compete with Starlink.

To complete the transaction, Amazon reportedly created a subsidiary called “Grapefruit Acquisition Sub II, LLC” to purchase Apple’s stake in Globalstar — a name many believe is a playful reference to Apple itself.

Despite the ownership changes, Amazon confirmed that Apple’s satellite-powered features, including Emergency SOS via Satellite and Roadside Assistance via Satellite, will continue functioning without interruption across supported iPhone and Apple Watch models.

Amazon also stated that it plans to maintain and expand its working relationship with Apple while exploring additional partnerships with other smartphone manufacturers in the future.

The move further highlights how satellite connectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of the mobile industry, especially as companies race to provide communication services in areas without traditional cellular coverage.
