Apple may be working on a major camera upgrade for future iPhones, but it looks like fans will need to be patient. New reports suggest that a 200MP telephoto camera won’t make its way to an iPhone until around 2028.

According to leaks, Apple is currently testing a 200MP periscope-style telephoto sensor, signaling a big leap in zoom and image detail. However, the company appears to be taking its usual cautious approach, refining the technology before bringing it to market.
This timeline is backed by insights from Morgan Stanley, which also indicates that such a high-resolution camera system is unlikely to debut before 2028. If that holds true, the feature could arrive with what’s expected to be called the iPhone 21.

Interestingly, Apple is rumored to shake up its naming strategy before then, possibly introducing an iPhone 20 next year to celebrate the iPhone’s 20th anniversary.
Earlier reports also suggest Apple has been evaluating a large 1/1.12-inch 200MP sensor, which could significantly improve low-light performance and zoom capabilities once it finally lands.
For now, it’s clear Apple is exploring the tech—but not rushing it.
