Google is getting ready to introduce its own version of Apple’s contact-sharing feature, and it now has a name—Tap to Share.

Designed as an alternative to NameDrop, this new Android feature will let users quickly share content like contacts, photos, videos, links, and locations simply by bringing two phones close together.
The process is straightforward but slightly more flexible than Apple’s approach. Both phones need to be unlocked and placed close together, typically with screens facing up. Once aligned correctly, a visual “glow” animation appears to confirm the connection. If that doesn’t work, users can try placing the phones back-to-back—mainly because NFC chip placement varies across Android devices.
The interface has also evolved since earlier leaks, with a cleaner contact-sharing screen and improved visual cues, suggesting Google is still refining the experience.
There’s no official release date yet, but Tap to Share is expected to arrive with a future Android update—possibly Android 17. As usual, it may debut first on Pixel devices before expanding to other Android phones.
If done right, this could finally give Android users a seamless, built-in way to share content just by tapping devices together—something Apple users have enjoyed for a while.
