Huawei and Oppo could adopt square selfie sensors in upcoming smartphones

Apple shook up selfie camera design with the iPhone 17 series by introducing a square (1:1) front camera sensor, and it looks like other manufacturers may be ready to follow. A new rumor suggests that Huawei and Oppo are already testing square selfie sensors for future smartphones, potentially making this a wider industry trend.

According to well-known tipster Digital Chat Station, both Huawei and Oppo are experimenting with 1:1 sensors for their front-facing cameras. For Huawei, the technology could debut on its camera-focused mid-range lineup, with the Nova 16 series mentioned as a likely candidate. This would mark a notable shift in Huawei’s approach to selfie cameras, especially in the competitive mid-range segment.

Oppo, on the other hand, is reportedly planning to introduce the square selfie sensor on its flagship devices. The Find X10 series is tipped as the starting point, and the leak claims that Oppo’s implementation could be even more advanced than Apple’s, hinting at additional software or hardware enhancements beyond the basic sensor format.

Apple’s iPhone 17 series uses an 18MP selfie camera with a 1:1 square sensor and auto-zoom support. The main advantage of this design is flexibility: the square format allows users to shoot comfortably in both portrait and landscape orientations without needing to rotate the phone, while also providing more room for intelligent cropping and framing.

If Huawei and Oppo move forward with this technology, square selfie sensors could become one of the next design trends in smartphone cameras, especially as brands look for new ways to improve front-facing photography and video without major hardware changes.
