Google Meet’s Conference Room Detection Expands to Android and iOS

Google is extending one of its smarter Google Meet features to mobile devices. Conference room detection, first introduced in August 2025 and previously limited to desktops and laptops, is now rolling out to Android and iOS. The feature is designed to simplify how users join group meetings when they are physically present in the same room, and its mobile expansion makes it significantly more practical for everyday workplace use. Google has confirmed that the rollout will be gradual, reaching supported devices over the next two weeks.

At its core, conference room detection automatically launches Google Meet’s companion mode when your device recognizes that you are in a shared meeting space with other participants. Instead of manually selecting companion mode or worrying about audio conflicts, the system intelligently checks you into the ongoing meeting. This is particularly useful in modern hybrid workplaces, where multiple people in the same room may still need to join a Meet call individually for screen sharing, chat access, or collaborative features.

The technology behind the feature relies on your device’s microphone detecting ultrasonic signals emitted within the conference room. These signals allow Google Meet to understand that several devices are co-located, enabling automatic room check-in while preventing echo and audio feedback issues that typically occur when multiple microphones are active in close proximity. Importantly, this process is seamless and requires no manual input once the feature is enabled and supported on your device.

Automatic room check-in is now supported across both the Google Meet and Gmail apps on Android and iOS. Users will need Google Meet version 336.0 on Android or iOS, or the Gmail app version 2025.12.01 on Android and 6.0.251201 on iOS. The feature is available to all Google Workspace customers as well as Workspace Individual subscribers, reinforcing Google’s ongoing focus on improving meeting efficiency across its productivity ecosystem. With this update, joining group meetings from mobile devices becomes faster, cleaner, and more intuitive, especially in shared office environments.
