Google Pixel Watch 4 Debuts as the First Smartwatch with Satellite Communication Support

At its recent launch event, Google unveiled a suite of new devices, including the Pixel 10 series and the highly anticipated Pixel Watch 4. Among the standout features of the new smartwatch is its support for satellite communication—making it the first Wear OS device to offer such capability.

A New Era of Connectivity

The Pixel Watch 4 is powered by Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chipset. One of the key innovations of this chip is its support for Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN), commonly referred to as satellite connectivity. This enables the watch to send and receive messages even in areas without traditional mobile network coverage, provided users subscribe to a compatible satellite service plan.

Battery Life Optimized for Remote Use

To complement its satellite capabilities, the Pixel Watch 4 features a larger battery than its predecessor. Google claims up to 30 hours of usage on the 41mm model and up to 40 hours on the 45mm version. This extended battery life is particularly beneficial for users relying on satellite communication in remote or emergency scenarios.

Looking Ahead

While the Pixel Watch 4 is currently the only Wear OS device to support satellite messaging, it is expected that other manufacturers will adopt Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform in future wearables. This marks a significant step forward in expanding the utility of smartwatches beyond conventional connectivity.
